BYD Launches 6,000 Overseas Chargers, Denza Expands in Europe with Z9 GT, D9
BYD has revealed an ambitious plan to deploy 6,000 flash-charging stations globally, with half located in Europe. This initiative supports the expansion of its premium Denza brand, which recently unveiled its Z9 GT model in Paris.
Expansion of Denza in Europe
The Z9 GT isn’t the only vehicle Denza is introducing. The lineup will also include the D9, a spacious seven-seat MPV. This vehicle has gained popularity in China as a leading high-end new energy MPV.
By 2026, Denza aims to establish itself in more than 30 European countries, with over 150 retail outlets planned. This strategy indicates a comprehensive approach to brand establishment, rather than merely introducing a few models.
BYD’s Flash Charging Network
The flash-charging infrastructure will consist of 6,000 stations worldwide, underscoring BYD’s commitment to enhancing electric vehicle accessibility. The company recently achieved a milestone in China, launching 5,000 operational flash chargers across 297 cities in just 27 days.
This initiative is part of BYD’s broader “Flash Charging” effort, designed to coincide with vehicle launches. Earlier reports suggest that deployment of the Flash Charging 2.0 network in Europe is set for 2026, perfectly aligning with Denza’s entry into the market.
Charging Technology and Performance
The Z9 GT introduces cutting-edge charging technology to European consumers. Under optimal conditions, it can charge from 10% to 70% in about 5 minutes, extending to 9 minutes for near-full зарядка. In harsher conditions, such as at −30°C, charging can still be completed in around 12 minutes. This system aims to minimize the difference in convenience between electric charging and traditional refueling.
Powertrain Details
- The Z9 GT offers a fully electric variant with a range of up to 1,036 km on the CLTC cycle.
- The plug-in hybrid model provides an electric-only range of 401 km.
- Configurations include a single motor producing 370 kW and a tri-motor setup with varying outputs of 230 kW, 310 kW, and 310 kW.
Additionally, the model is equipped with BYD’s second-generation blade battery, advanced suspension system, and a sophisticated driver assistance system.
Pricing and Market Introduction
The Z9 GT is priced at approximately 115,000 euros, or around 125,000 USD, positioning it competitively against luxury models like the Porsche Taycan. It will be available in several European markets, including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The D9 MPV is expected to follow soon, further diversifying Denza’s offerings.
Strategic Industry Positioning
Denza has transitioned to being wholly owned by BYD, moving away from its previous joint venture with Mercedes-Benz. This change allows Denza to carve out a niche as a technology-driven premium brand aimed at challenging established European automakers.
Chinese manufacturers are increasingly coupling vehicle exports with investments in charging infrastructure, a trend that BYD exemplifies. The deployment of high-power chargers alongside a diverse vehicle lineup demonstrates BYD’s commitment to supporting electric mobility in Europe.
