Gout Gout Sets New National Record with 19.67s Sprint

In Sydney on April 12, 2026, 18-year-old Gout clocked 19.67 seconds to win the men’s 200 metres. The time improved his Australian record and established a new under-20 international mark.

Record and historical context

Gout’s 19.67s came with a legal tailwind of 1.7 metres per second. He ran on the newly laid track at Sydney Olympic Park in cool, windy conditions.

The performance edged past his own previous best of 20.02s. Last year he also ran 19.84s, but that effort had an illegal tailwind.

Comparisons with past greats were immediate. Usain Bolt ran 19.93s at age 18 in 2004. Bolt’s senior world record remains 19.19s, set in 2009.

American Erriyon Knighton has posted faster times for the age group. His 19.49s from 2022 was not ratified due to unmet anti-doping requirements.

The final and key rivals

South Australian Aidan Murphy finished second in a personal best of 19.88s. Murphy led at the halfway mark but Gout closed strongly in the final 100 metres.

Rival Lachlan Kennedy withdrew from the 200m. Kennedy had produced two sub-10s 100m runs on Friday and Saturday but did not line up for the final.

Kennedy had beaten Gout at the Maurie Plant Meet last month. With Kennedy absent, Gout said he felt he had to shoulder expectations for both athletes.

Athlete reaction and plans

Gout described the run as part of a larger build this season. He said he had just turned 18 and believes he can run faster.

He credited gym work for improved strength and a stronger first 100 metres. He aims to make sub-20 seconds consistently this year.

Rather than accept a Commonwealth Games spot, Gout plans to focus on the World Athletics U20 Championships later this year. He said that event is his priority.

Other national championship highlights

Jess Hull won the women’s 5000m and recovered from a fall earlier in the championships. Hull withdrew from the women’s 800m with soreness.

Peter Bol claimed the men’s 800m title. Nicola Olyslagers won the women’s high jump.

With the championships complete, Commonwealth Games Australia named its first athletes for Glasgow 2026. The Games open on July 23, 2026.

Gout’s 19.67s performance set a new national record in the 200m sprint. The result will draw international attention ahead of the U20 worlds.
