Aaron Glenn, Darren Mougey Praise Garrett Wilson, Jets WRs
The New York Jets enter an offseason with work to do in the wide receiver room. The staff plans to add players through the draft, unrestricted free agency, and undrafted free agency.
Leadership’s assessment
Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey have expressed confidence in the current group. At the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Mougey said he felt good about the receiver corps and stressed the importance of Garrett Wilson returning healthy.
A theme at the meeting was Darren Mougey Praise Garrett Wilson and his expected impact. The club still expects to supplement the roster, but praise for the existing players was clear.
Garrett Wilson’s status and context
Wilson missed 10 of the final 11 games last season because of a knee injury. He signed a multiyear extension with the team in July.
Even with limited action, Wilson led the Jets with 395 receiving yards. That marked the fourth straight season he topped the team in that category.
Return-to-play note
Wilson did appear once after his injury, in the Week 10 win over Cleveland. He recorded no catches in that appearance, the first time in his career he finished a game without a catch after returning.
Performance metrics and projections
Wilson’s earlier pro seasons averaged 93 receptions and 1,083 yards per year. Last season’s totals fell well short of those marks due to injury.
- Prorated over 17 games from his first six contests, his pace showed: 159 targets.
- That prorate also produced 102 catches and 1,119 receiving yards.
- The projection included 11 touchdowns, and all but the targets would have been career highs.
Outlook for the position group
Coaches expect Garrett Wilson to be a focal point when healthy. Aaron Glenn called him a true No. 1 receiver and highlighted his consistent production.
Competition and new additions will shape the final depth chart. Still, current evaluations leave the Jets WRs roster feeling optimistic as the offseason begins.
