MSC Unveils Exciting New Beach Club in Bahamas
MSC Group plans to transform a dormant section of the Grand Lucayan Resort into a private beach destination for its cruise passengers. The company will convert a 20-acre plot, formerly the Reef Village area, into an MSC Beach Club for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests.
Project details
CTL Maritime, MSC’s infrastructure arm, reached an agreement with the Bahamian government to acquire and redevelop the property in Freeport. The site sits on one of Grand Bahama’s largest resort complexes and has been largely idle for years.
Construction is slated to begin on April 12, 2026, subject to environmental clearances and other permits. The project follows the industry trend of cruise lines building branded shore destinations.
Scope of work
- Conversion of a 20-acre portion of Grand Lucayan Resort.
- Facilities designed for MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys passengers.
- Integration with MSC’s wider Caribbean strategy, including Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve enhancements.
Port development and wider investment
The beach club is part of a larger plan tied to a new cruise port at Freeport Harbour. The Bahamian government told Filmogaz.com that MSC intends to invest about $450 million in the harbour development centered on Billy Cay.
About $400 million is allocated for a new cruise terminal complex. The plan includes berths, a welcome plaza, shops, restaurants, and transport facilities. Another $50 million will go toward upgrades to the existing harbour area and supporting infrastructure.
Design and access
Officials say the proposed port will be a multi-user facility open to all cruise lines. The project envisions entertainment zones, dining outlets, and transport staging to link passengers with island excursions.
Industry context
MSC’s move follows similar initiatives by other cruise lines in the Bahamas. Royal Caribbean opened a private beach club on Paradise Island in December 2025. Carnival launched Celebration Key on Grand Bahama in July 2025.
Norwegian Cruise Line is also upgrading Great Stirrup Cay with new piers and visitor facilities. These projects aim to control guest experience and boost onshore spending.
Economic impact and commitments
MSC’s combined projects in The Bahamas approach nearly $1.5 billion in investment. Officials estimate the developments will create more than 1,000 jobs across construction and operations.
CTL Maritime president Gianluca Suprani described the Bahamas as a long-term strategic partner. He emphasized the company’s family-owned approach and its aim to deliver lasting value for Bahamian communities.
Next steps
Key approvals remain outstanding before ground is broken. Environmental reviews and permitting will determine the official start date.
When completed, the MSC Beach Club and the new port facilities will form part of MSC’s broader Caribbean footprint. The developments are intended to enhance visitor experience and support local tourism recovery.
