Ryanair Passenger Jailed for Forcing Pilot to Abort Landing

A man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for his disruptive behavior on a Ryanair flight. Stephen Blofield, aged 61, forced the pilot to abort a landing attempt due to his intoxication and aggression. The incident occurred during a flight from Krakow to Bristol on November 11, 2025, and raised significant safety concerns among passengers and crew.

Incident Details

Bristol Crown Court revealed that Blofield consumed alcohol at the airport before boarding. This intake continued during the flight, leading to abusive behavior towards the Polish cabin crew. As the airplane approached Bristol Airport, he refused to comply with safety instructions, specifically to fasten his seatbelt and remain seated.

This refusal prompted the pilot to abandon the initial landing, creating a tense situation onboard. Upon landing, police were present to arrest Blofield. Prosecutor Ian Fenny described Blofield as drunken, aggressive, and confrontational when officers arrived. He stated, “The confined space of the aircraft raised concerns that he might escalate the situation.”

Consequences of Blofield’s Actions

  • Blofield’s aggressive demeanor led to his removal via an ambulift, typically used for disabled passengers.
  • Passengers were left onboard for an extended period while authorities managed the evacuation.
  • Police described Blofield’s abusive behavior as among the worst experiences in their careers.

Blofield pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including being drunk on an aircraft and using threatening language. His defense highlighted his struggle with medication loss for back pain and anxiety, which he sought to alleviate with alcohol prior to the return flight.

Legal Outcome and Sentencing

Blofield expressed remorse upon being sentenced. Judge Euan Ambrose deemed his actions too serious for any sentence other than imprisonment. The judge emphasized that Blofield’s persistent drinking and disruptive behavior created fear among passengers and crew alike.

Although Blofield was on benefits and had a lengthy criminal history, the court held that the safety risks presented by his behavior warranted a custodial sentence.

His case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior when traveling and the potential consequences of violating safety regulations.
