Michigan’s Johnson Jr. & Burnett Aim to Shine as Chicago Legends in Title Game

In Indianapolis, Morez Johnson Jr. and Nimari Burnett prepared with Michigan at Lucas Oil Stadium. Both are starters on a 36-win Wolverines squad set to meet UConn Monday in the NCAA final.

Chicago roots

Johnson, 20, grew up in Chicago and attended St. Rita for three years. He finished his high school career at Thornton before playing one season at Illinois.

Burnett, 24, also hails from Chicago. He won a Class 3A title as a freshman at Morgan Park while playing alongside Ayo Dosunmu. He later moved to a prep school in California.

Transfers and fit at Michigan

Johnson made headlines last offseason when he left Illinois for Michigan. He said he has no regrets about the move.

Illinois also reached the Final Four this season. Johnson credited Michigan coach Dusty May with opening the offense for him.

He described May as a coach who changed the course of his career. He said he is grateful for the opportunity and the bigger offensive role.

Both players stressed their pride in being from Chicago. Burnett noted that players are shaped by their environment.
