Double Dragon and Renegade Creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto Passes Away at 64
Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the renowned creator of the iconic video games Double Dragon and the River City (Kuno-kun) series, has sadly passed away at 64. This news was confirmed by his son, Ryūbō Kishimoto, through several social media posts.
On Facebook, Ryūbō shared, “I am sorry to inform you that my father has passed to rest on April 2, 2026. I hope you will continue to enjoy my father’s works, including Kuno-kun.” He later expressed his gratitude on Twitter/X, acknowledging the heartfelt messages from fans worldwide and the deep appreciation for his father’s legacy.
The Legacy of Yoshihisa Kishimoto
Kishimoto’s journey in the gaming industry began at Data East, where he initially worked on laserdisc games. His career took a significant turn when he joined Technōs Japan, a company where he found his creative voice. He became widely known for developing popular beat-em-up games, particularly the Double Dragon and Kunio-kun series.
Influences and Contributions
The creation of his first game, Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, known as Renegade internationally, was inspired by personal experiences and martial arts films, particularly Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon. Released in 1986, this title marked the beginning of the River City franchise.
Under Kishimoto’s guidance, Technōs released numerous sequels for various platforms, including arcade machines, NES, SNES, and PlayStation. However, dissatisfaction with the declining investment in game development led him to leave Technōs.
Independent Work and Recent Projects
After departing Technōs, Kishimoto continued his passion for game development independently, adopting the name “Plophet.” He created original works and offered consultation on various gaming projects. His most recent significant contribution was as director of Double Dragon IV in 2017, published by Arc System Works.
Community Tribute and Remembrance
Ryūbō Kishimoto announced that a private funeral would be held for his father shortly after the news of his passing broke. The gaming community continues to share memories and pay tribute to Yoshihisa Kishimoto, celebrating his invaluable contributions to the industry.
