Torquay Hotel ‘Eyesore’ Catches Fire Again
An abandoned hotel on Belgrave Road in Torquay suffered another blaze late on Friday, April 3. Fire crews remained at the scene through the night before bringing the fire under control early the next morning.
Fire details and timings
The fire was first reported at about 9pm. Crews located the seat of the blaze on the building’s first floor.
The incident was declared extinguished at around 5am on Saturday, April 4. The cause has not yet been confirmed by the fire service.
Emergency response
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue mobilised a significant response. Five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform attended.
- Stations involved: Torquay, Paignton, Newton Abbot, Totnes.
- Equipment used included breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and a safety jet.
- Crews also used a thermal imaging camera, smoke hoods, gas monitoring and small tools.
Previous incidents and local concerns
The derelict building was boarded up by police last October. Authorities described it as an eyesore and a magnet for anti-social behaviour.
Residents and emergency services have dealt with multiple problems at the site. A fire in March 2024 was believed to have been started deliberately.
There was a separate report of a sexual assault at the property in September 2025. The location has a documented history of crime and safety issues.
Ongoing investigation
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue have not released a cause for the latest blaze. Crews remain available to support any follow-up inquiries.
