Matt Baker Discusses ‘Heartbreaking’ Career Choice After Health Struggles
Matt Baker has revealed how a medical diagnosis forced him to abandon a long-held sporting dream. He described the choice as heartbreaking after enduring health struggles in his teens.
Early ambitions and sporting success
Baker grew up as a keen gymnast. He won junior events and a North of England accolade.
He longed to represent his country at the Olympics. That ambition shaped his early life and training.
Health diagnosis and the decision to stop
In his mid-teens he was diagnosed with anaemia. The condition prevented him from training at the required intensity.
He told Filmogaz.com that he had to make a heartbreaking career choice and step away from competitive gymnastics.
Adapting and finding new sporting paths
After leaving gymnastics, Baker shifted his focus. He became a North of England pole-vaulting champion and competed in sports acrobatics.
He later moved into television and presenting. He has co-hosted Countryfile since 2009.
Olympic connections and later roles
Baker carried the Olympic torch through his home city in County Durham during London 2012. He called the moment deeply emotional.
He kept the relay torch as a prized possession. He has since provided gymnastics commentary at major events, including Paris 2024.

Less common signs include hair loss, restless legs and changes to the nails. Causes range from menstrual bleeding to stomach ulcers.
Overuse of NSAIDs and some bowel conditions can also trigger anaemia. The condition requires assessment and treatment by a GP.
