Samsung Messages Retirement Date Announced: What Users Need to Know
Samsung has confirmed that its built-in messaging app will be discontinued in July. The end-of-service notice appears on the Samsung Messages US page, and the exact date is available inside the app.
How to switch to Google Messages
Samsung published step-by-step guidance for users moving to Google Messages. The process differs by Android version.
On Android 12 and 13, users must manually add the Google Messages icon or shortcut to the home screen dock. On Android 14 and newer, the phone guides users through setting Google Messages as the default app. Samsung also said compatible Galaxy phones will automatically place the Google Messages icon in the dock.
Which devices are already affected
New Galaxy phones are already moving away from Samsung Messages. The Galaxy S26 and other recent flagships cannot download Samsung Messages.
For those models, the retirement notice has no direct impact.
Service limitations after discontinuation
Samsung warns that, after the app is discontinued, messages will not be delivered through Samsung Messages. The only exceptions are emergency service numbers and emergency contacts defined on the device.
Devices running Android 11 or older are not included in this specific end-of-service announcement.
Smartwatch compatibility
Older smartwatches will face limitations when Samsung Messages stops receiving updates. Watches running Tizen OS and models released before the Galaxy Watch 4 do not support Google Messages.
Those watches may no longer display full conversation history after July. They will remain able to read and send basic text messages.
RCS and older devices
Devices launched before 2022 may experience RCS interruptions after switching to Google Messages. SMS and MMS will continue to work normally.
Samsung says RCS services can be restored if both parties move to Google Messages.
Benefits Samsung highlights for switching
- Advanced spam filters and scam detection.
- Multi-device connectivity for linked phones and tablets.
- Google Messages’ suite of AI features and RCS support.
Users concerned about the Samsung Messages retirement date should open their app to find the exact day. Back up important conversations and check smartwatch compatibility before switching. Filmogaz.com will monitor further updates and share new guidance as needed.
