Epic Games Announces Layoffs Affecting Over 1,000 Fortnite Employees

Epic Games announced a major workforce reduction that affects more than 1,000 Fortnite employees. CEO Tim Sweeney disclosed the cuts and framed them as part of a broader effort to stabilize the company.

Size of the cuts and severance

The move follows last year’s reduction of over 800 roles. Leadership identified roughly $500 million in cost savings across contracting, marketing, and open positions.

Impacted staff will receive a severance package with four months’ pay. U.S.-based employees will also get six months of paid healthcare.

Reasons behind the decision

Sweeney cited a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began last year. He pointed to industry-wide pressures such as rising competition and weaker consumer spending.

He also acknowledged challenges unique to Fortnite. Those include inconsistent season-to-season execution and early-stage work to return and optimize Fortnite on mobile devices.

Product and pricing changes

Earlier this month, Epic raised the price of V-bucks. The company said higher operating costs for Fortnite drove that decision.

  • Ballistic — being wound down
  • Fortnite Festival “battle stage” — being wound down

The core Fortnite Festival rhythm title, developed with Harmonix and featuring seasonal pop-star headliners, will remain online.

Not related to AI

Sweeney explicitly said these layoffs are not tied to AI developments. He described the changes as efforts to put Epic in a more stable position.

Outlook from leadership

Sweeney called current market conditions among the most extreme the company has faced. He said the upheaval also creates opportunity for companies that emerge stronger.

He emphasized Epic’s goal to stabilize operations and support other developers in building an open entertainment future.
