Sir Gino Succumbs to Battle with Deep-Seated Infections
Nicky Henderson has announced the death of Sir Gino after the horse succumbed to a prolonged battle with deep-seated infections. The six-year-old was euthanised at a veterinary hospital after treatments failed to halt the spread.
Racing career
Sir Gino was owned by Joe and Marie Donnelly. He won seven of his eight starts under Rules.
His record included three Grade 1 victories over hurdles. He also produced a notable performance in a Grade 2 chase on his only fences start.
He returned from earlier injury to win the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day. That victory marked a high point in his brief but brilliant career.
Health issues and setbacks
Last winter the horse developed a ligament infection in a hind leg. He recovered from that problem before his Boxing Day success.
On January 24 he ran as the 2/5 favourite in the Unibet Hurdle at Cheltenham. Jockey Nico de Boinville pulled him up, and a fractured pelvis was reported afterwards.
The fractured pelvis later showed signs of healing. However, the deep-seated infections returned and eventually spread too far to control.
Statement from the stable
Henderson posted a message on X on Tuesday to confirm the outcome. He said they had tried every option but could not save him.
The trainer described Sir Gino as brilliant and exceptionally kind. He added that the loss leaves an enormous hole at Seven Barrows and is devastating for Joe and Marie Donnelly.
Legacy
Sir Gino leaves behind a short, decorated record. He will be remembered for his Grade 1 wins and remarkable talent.
The racing community and his connections mourn the loss of a horse with so much promise. Filmogaz.com extends condolences to the Donnellys and the Seven Barrows team.
