Hawthorn Legend Signs with Channel 9

Dermott Brereton, a celebrated Hawthorn premiership player, is making a return to commentary with Channel 9 in 2026. After a 14-year tenure at Fox Footy, he is excited to rejoin the network where he previously built his broadcasting career.

Brereton’s Career Shift

The 61-year-old decided to leave Fox Footy due to a reduced role, which limited his opportunities in football analysis. At Channel 9, he will participate in flagship programs such as Footy Classified and the Sunday Footy Show, with potential appearances on the Footy Furnace.

Brereton’s Perspective on Football

In a statement reported by News Corp, Brereton expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to re-engage in the analytical side of football. He stated, “The opportunity for the analytical side of football had dried up at Fox, but with Channel 9, it gives me that opportunity once again.” Brereton prides himself on his unique perspective on the game, which he considers his strong suit.

Continued Involvement in Football

Alongside his work with Channel 9, Brereton will maintain his role on SEN Radio. He will co-host Crunch Time on Saturdays, alongside prominent figures such as Tom Morris, Gerard Whateley, Adam Simpson, Kane Cornes, Ken Hinkley, and Luke Hodge.

A Legacy in Football

Brereton has been a prominent figure in Australian rules football since the 1980s and 1990s. During his career, he played 189 games for the Hawthorn Hawks, securing five premierships and achieving a personal best and fairest award in 1985. He also earned two selections in the VFL Team of the Year. After his time with Hawthorn, he concluded his playing career with stints at Sydney in 1994 and Collingwood in 1995.
