Record-Breaking $16.5M Auction Sets New High for Trading Cards

In a historic auction, a Pikachu Illustrator card sold for a staggering $16.5 million, setting a new record for trading cards. This rare card, in mint condition, was sold by YouTuber and wrestler Logan Paul through Goldin auction house. The sale price almost tripled the $5.3 million he initially paid for the card in 2021.

Record-Breaking Auction and New Owner

The sale was validated by Guinness World Records adjudicator Sarah Casson, who confirmed it as the highest price ever achieved for a trading card. The buyer, AJ Scaramucci, is a venture capitalist. He is also the son of Anthony Scaramucci, who has held notable roles, including White House communications director.

A Unique Treasure Hunt

This acquisition marks the beginning of Scaramucci’s ambitious “planetary treasure hunt.” He expressed intentions to seek out iconic items, including:

  • A T-Rex fossil
  • A copy of the Declaration of Independence

Scaramucci’s treasure hunt aims to collect what he describes as “the uncollectible.” His website hints at more exciting acquisitions in the future.

Rarity and Grading of the Card

Only 40 Pikachu Illustrator cards are known to exist, making this particular card extremely valuable. Scaramucci’s card holds a perfect grading of 10 from Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), the leading firm in card grading standards.

Bonus Addition to the Sale

To enhance the transaction, Logan Paul included a diamond necklace he wore during his WrestleMania debut in 2022. This addition added to the card’s allure and historical significance.

With this record-setting auction, the trading cards market continues to capture attention, inviting collectors and investors to explore the valuable world of rare collectibles.
