Lincolnshire Food Waste Bin Collection: Start Dates Announced
Residents in Lincolnshire will soon receive new containers for food waste as part of a nationwide initiative. The initiative aims to reduce the amount of food waste sent to landfills, which currently constitutes about 26% of the region’s total waste.
Lincolnshire Food Waste Bin Collection: Start Dates Announced
Each household will receive two food waste caddies: a five-litre indoor caddie for kitchen use and a larger 23-litre outdoor caddy equipped with a lockable lid. Additionally, each household will receive 52 bin liners for convenience.
What Can Be Collected?
The following items can be placed in the food waste caddies:
- Uneaten food and plate scrapings
- Meat and fish, both raw and cooked
- Dairy products
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Rice, pasta, and beans
- Bread, pastries, and cakes
- Raw or cooked fruit and vegetables, including peelings
Collection Schedule by District
The rollout of food waste caddies will occur at different times across various districts:
| District | Start Date for Caddies | Start Date for Collections |
|---|---|---|
| Lincoln | February 23 | March 30 |
| West Lindsey | February 2 | End of March |
| East Lindsey, Boston & South Holland | To be announced, aiming for Autumn 2026 | To be announced |
| North Kesteven | Already begun | March 30 |
| South Kesteven | February 2 | Week of April 13 |
Benefits of Separate Food Waste Collection
Separating food waste allows it to be processed at local anaerobic digestion facilities. This process transforms waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer and renewable energy. Although participation is encouraged, residents may choose not to use the caddies without facing penalties.
The new outdoor caddies are smaller than traditional wheeled bins and should be placed at the curbside on designated collection days. This initiative represents a significant step toward more sustainable waste management in Lincolnshire.
