Curt Cignetti Swiftly Appoints Indiana’s New Quarterbacks Coach

Indiana University football is set to welcome Tino Sunseri back as the quarterbacks coach for the 2026 season. This announcement comes shortly after the former quarterbacks coach, Chandler Whitmer, accepted a similar position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Curt Cignetti’s Coaching Changes

Tino Sunseri was previously part of the coaching staff brought to Indiana by head coach Curt Cignetti from James Madison University in 2024. Sunseri, a former University of Pittsburgh quarterback, transitioned into coaching after his time in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Sunseri’s Coaching Journey

  • Worked as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama.
  • Served as quarterbacks coach at James Madison University starting in 2021.

During his tenure at James Madison, Sunseri achieved notable success working with transfer quarterbacks. His roster included players such as Todd Centeio in 2022 and Jordan McCloud in 2023. At Indiana, quarterback Kurtis Rourke produced impressive results, attaining the second-highest quarterback rating in the nation with more than 3,000 yards passing and setting a then-single-season record with 29 touchdowns.

Looking Ahead

In his new role, Sunseri will work with talented transfer quarterback Josh Hoover from TCU. Hoover is a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 11 quarterback nationally. He leads all returning players with a remarkable 9,629 career passing yards.

Future Coaching Developments

Sunseri’s appointment fills the last vacancy in Cignetti’s coaching staff. Indiana is poised to finalize contracts for the remaining on-field assistants, which are expected to include pay raises. Recently announced contract extensions were granted to offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Bryant Haines.
