Minister of Energy and Mines, Yacouba Zabré Gouba, recently assessed the 2025 objectives contract and announced plans for the mining sector. He reported a successful completion rate of 89.66% for the year’s objectives. The minister emphasized that 2025 focused on operationalizing various reforms, particularly those aimed at enhancing Burkina Faso’s energy and mining sovereignty.
Highlights of the Mining Sector in 2025
Minister Gouba stated that the actions undertaken were essential for asserting national control over natural resources. Notably, Burkina Faso witnessed an increase of approximately 30 tons in gold production compared to 2024, reaching over 94 tons by the end of 2025. The country also successfully collected nearly 10 kilograms of gold in its fight against fraudulent mining activities. The artisanal mining sector contributed around 42 tons, significantly boosting the national economy.
Government Strategies for Energy Development
The government focused on six primary strategies to enhance energy production. One of the key initiatives is to increase power generation capacity, with new projects expected to add nearly 200 megawatts by 2026. This enhancement aims to strengthen the national production infrastructure and ensure energy sovereignty.

Looking ahead to 2026, Yacouba Zabré Gouba committed to continuing efforts to enhance Burkina Faso’s energy and mining sovereignty. Goals include:
