York’s Car and Coach Park Faces Flooding as River Levels Remain High

Residents in York are facing significant flooding threats as river levels surge. The River Ouse, particularly between Lendal Bridge and Millennium Bridge, poses risks to nearby properties and landmarks. St George’s Field car and coach park and Rowntree Park are included in the current flood warnings.

Current Flooding Situation in York

On January 29, flood alerts were in effect for the Lower and Upper River Derwent, as well as the Upper River Ouse, according to the Environment Agency (EA). People are advised to stay updated on local alerts and comply with official guidance.

Affected Areas

  • St George’s Field car and coach park
  • Rowntree Park
  • Tower Gardens

This morning, water from the River Ouse began spilling over into New Walk, encroaching upon sections of the car park at St George’s Field. Flood warning signs were placed at the car park entrance as a precaution.

River Levels and Warnings

As of 5:45 AM, the River Ouse level reached 3.29 meters, above the typical range of 1.9 meters. This rise is concerning, as property flooding is deemed possible at levels exceeding three meters. The current levels are notably higher compared to the previous day.

At a nearby measurement station, the Foss Barrier recorded a height of 8.25 meters, a significant increase from the normal maximum of 7.9 meters. The historical high of 10.2 meters occurred on November 4, 2000.

Recommendations for Residents

The Environment Agency suggests that people steer clear of floodwaters, especially when walking, cycling, or driving. Areas of concern include:

  • Fields and recreational lands
  • Minor roads
  • Car parks
  • Farmland

In addition to York, flooding potential is also noted at Buttecrambe Mill and other critical routes between Malton and Stamford Bridge. Residents are reminded to regularly check for updates as assessments are ongoing throughout the day.
