Google Launches Enhanced Theft Protection Features for Android

Google has launched enhanced theft protection features for Android devices, focusing on improving security and user recovery. These updates build upon the existing anti-theft measures introduced in October 2024, aiming to protect users before, during, and after theft attempts.

Enhanced Android Theft Protection Features

The Android Security Team emphasized the importance of these new features, stating, “Phone theft is more than just losing a device; it’s a form of financial fraud.” The updates introduce several improvements to make devices less appealing targets for thieves.

Key Updates to Android Theft Protection

  • Failed Authentication Lock: This feature now includes granular controls, allowing users to enable or disable automatic screen locking after multiple failed attempts.
  • Identity Check Expansion: Users must present biometric authentication for certain actions outside trusted locations, protecting all apps and services using the Android Biometric Prompt.
  • Accidental Lockout Prevention: The system prevents accidental lockouts from curious children by ensuring incorrect guesses do not count towards retry limits. Increased lockout times after failed attempts deter thieves.
  • Remote Lock Update: This tool allows users to lock lost or stolen devices. An optional security challenge verifies ownership before initiating the lock.

Default Features for New Android Devices in Brazil

For new Android devices activated in Brazil, Google has included two theft protection features by default:

  • Theft Detection Lock: Automatically locks the device if it detects a “snatch-and-run” theft.
  • Remote Lock: Enables users to lock their devices remotely.

Available Versions and Future Updates

The enhanced recovery tools are available for devices running Android 10 or later. In contrast, the new authentication safeguards require Android 16 or higher. The Android Security Team stated, “We’ve expanded our security to protect you against an even wider range of threats.”

In-Call Scam Protection Expansion

In December, Google broadened its in-call scam protection, which now supports various banks and financial applications in the United States. This feature, initially launched in May, warns users of potential risks when they use financial apps or share screens during calls with unknown numbers.

These updates signify Google’s commitment to enhancing Android device security, making it harder for thieves to succeed and easier for users to recover their devices. The updates are part of a broader effort to ensure that Android users feel secure in their device usage.
