TTC Plans to Launch Eglinton Crosstown LRT on February 8, Ford Announces

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) plans to launch the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) on February 8. This announcement, made on Monday at Queen’s Park, indicates that the highly anticipated opening is just weeks away.

Opening Date Confirmation

Ford stated that the TTC’s goal is set for February 8, though he noted, “I’m not confirming — that’s TTC.” Since Metrolinx completed the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and handed it over to the TTC, the latter has been responsible for finalizing the opening date.

A source close to the project later confirmed February 8 as the target launch date for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Previously, there was a significant meeting in December between leaders from Metrolinx and the TTC that set this date in motion.

Background on the Project

  • Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay had initially suggested the line was ready to open by December 28.
  • TTC CEO Mandeep Lali advocated for February 8 to address outstanding issues.
  • The TTC raised concerns about prior mistakes made during the Ottawa LRT launch, emphasizing the need for a bedding-in period.

Lali’s experience with transit systems in New York and London informed his cautious approach. The TTC is particularly focused on avoiding the pitfalls that led to technical failures in previous light rail projects.

Current Concerns and Past Issues

Both Metrolinx and the TTC are handling complications following the winter debut of the Finch West LRT. This system faced multiple shutdowns due to freezing temperatures and has received complaints about travel delays.

As anticipation builds for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT’s launch, the TTC hopes to ensure a successful opening while learning from the challenges encountered in other transit projects.
