Sepp Blatter Advises World Cup Fans Against Traveling to U.S. in 2026

Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA president, recently expressed concerns regarding the upcoming World Cup in the United States. He has suggested that fans might consider boycotting the tournament due to security issues. This recommendation aligns with remarks made by Swiss lawyer Mark Pieth, who has significant experience in anti-corruption reforms related to FIFA.

Security Concerns for World Cup Fans

Blatter articulated his support for Pieth’s claims, particularly following the recent tragic death of protester Renee Good at the hands of an American immigration agent. This incident reportedly occurred in Minneapolis earlier this month. Blatter’s endorsement of Pieth’s comments follows the death of another American citizen, Alex Pretti, over the weekend.

  • Host Countries: United States, Canada, Mexico

During an interview with Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, Pieth advised fans to stay away from the United States. He cited increasing domestic issues, including the marginalization of political opponents and abuses by immigration services, as deterrents for traveling to the tournament. “Avoid the United States! You’ll get a better view on television anyway,” Pieth emphasized.

He further warned that fans should be prepared for strict measures upon their arrival. “If they don’t engage properly with authorities, they could be sent home immediately,” he added.

Blatter’s Legacy and Current Leadership

Sepp Blatter stepped down from his role as FIFA president in 2015 amid controversies and scandals. He was succeeded by Gianni Infantino, who has since created connections with influential figures, including former President Donald Trump. Blatter and Michel Platini, the former UEFA chief, were acquitted of charges linked to a delayed payment to Platini for consultancy services rendered in 2011. Platini remarked recently that Infantino’s leadership style has become more autocratic and favorable to the wealthy and powerful.
