Ubisoft Halts Prince Of Persia Remake and 5 Games in Major Reset
Ubisoft has announced a significant shift in its development strategy, halting the production of six games, including the much-anticipated remake of *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time*. The company has decided to delay seven additional projects as part of a broader organizational and operational reset.
Ubisoft’s Major Reset
During a media briefing reported by Video Games Chronicle, Ubisoft revealed its plan to undergo a major reset. This initiative will focus on three key areas:
- A new operating model
- A refocused portfolio with a revised three-year roadmap
- Rightsizing the organization
Reasons for the Reset
Ubisoft’s decision is influenced by the shift toward a more selective AAA market and intensified competition in the shooter genre. Increased development costs have posed challenges for publishers, leading to the need for greater financial viability in AAA content.
Ubisoft aims to enhance game quality while maintaining competitive costs. The new operational model will comprise five creative houses specializing in various genres, including the newly established Vantage Studios.
Cancellation of Prince of Persia Remake and Other Games
The remake of *Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time*, originally announced in September 2020, faced multiple delays before its cancellation. Development initially took place at Ubisoft’s studios in Mumbai and Pune, before transferring to Ubisoft Montreal in 2022.
The game’s latest update, shared during Ubisoft Forward in 2024, projected a 2026 release. However, the recent portfolio review concluded that it did not meet the new quality standards set by the company.
Unannounced Games Affected
Alongside *Prince of Persia*, four additional unannounced titles, including three new intellectual properties and a mobile game, have also been shelved. Ubisoft stated these projects fell short of the enhanced quality criteria. Furthermore, seven other unannounced projects are being delayed to ensure they meet Ubisoft’s quality benchmarks.
One of these delayed games, speculated to be a remake of *Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag*, was noted in the PEGI database as *Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced*.
Future Developments
Despite the cancellations, Ubisoft continues to invest in new content. The company currently has four new IPs in development, which includes *March of Giants*, a MOBA acquired from Amazon Games.
In the past year, Ubisoft has faced challenges with underwhelming launches for titles such as *Star Wars Outlaws*. The establishment of Vantage Studios in 2025 reflects its commitment to driving successful franchises like *Assassin’s Creed* and *Far Cry*. Recent restructuring has also led to the closure of Ubisoft Halifax and layoffs at Massive Entertainment, following similar actions at other studios.
Ubisoft’s strategy aims to adapt to the evolving gaming landscape while ensuring that the quality of its output meets the expectations of its loyal fanbase.
