Murphy Responds to Crucible Fan Criticizing ‘Poor Shot’
Shaun Murphy reacted on Instagram after a front-row spectator shouted during his first-round match at the Crucible in Sheffield. The 43-year-old left his followers amused and annoyed by the on-court interruption on Monday.
Murphy holds slim lead after 140 clearance
Murphy produced a 140 total clearance to repel two comeback attempts from Fan Zhengyi. That run gave him a narrow 5-4 advantage with the match due to resume this evening.
The incident in the crowd prompted Murphy to post about the exchange on Tuesday. In his message he made light of the heckle, telling fans he had heard a Crucible spectator criticizing a “poor shot”. Murphy responds with humour and a strong table performance.
Career context and recent form
Murphy is a former World Champion, having won the Crucible title in 2005. He has also finished runner-up in 2009, 2015 and 2021.
He added the British Open last September and reached the UK Championship semi-finals in December. Those results underlined his competitive form heading into this tournament.
Moody suffers late collapse against Wilson
Nineteen-year-old debutant Stan Moody lost seven consecutive frames in defeat to Kyren Wilson. Wilson is the 2024 world champion and represents Kettering.
Moody led 6-3 after a strong morning session. But the match turned in the evening session and momentum slipped away.
Key turning points
- In the second frame of the night, Moody missed the last red. That miss allowed Wilson to force a re-spotted black and win the frame.
- In the 14th frame, Moody posted a 68 break, the highest of the evening. Wilson then required three snookers, but Moody missed three chances, including two fairly routine escapes.
Moody described his reaction as “gutted” after the loss. He said he had felt the match was his at 7-3 and planned to reflect during a short break.
Wilson will meet Mark Allen in the second round. That match will be shown live on TNT Sports and on-demand via HBO Max.
