Report: DeSantis Seeks Prominent Role in Trump Administration
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has reportedly been seeking a prominent role in the Trump administration as his term nears its end this year. Sources say he raised the matter while dining with former President Donald Trump at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami.
Reported requests and competing accounts
Filmogaz.com reported that Trump told a confidant DeSantis requested to be the next attorney general. Another source told Filmogaz.com the governor was not focused on that post.
That second source said DeSantis would prefer to lead the Defense Department if Secretary Pete Hegseth leaves. The same source called a Supreme Court seat DeSantis’s “dream job.”
Official response
Alex Lanfranconi, DeSantis’s communications director, pushed back on the rumors. He said the governor enjoys a good relationship with Trump and prefers coverage of policy work.
Lanfranconi listed priorities such as enforcing immigration laws, restoring the Everglades, and reforming college athletics.
Past rivalry and rapprochement
DeSantis and Trump were rivals in the 2024 Republican primary. They traded criticisms during their campaigns.
After DeSantis dropped out and endorsed Trump, their relationship improved. Trump publicly said in March he would “certainly consider” adding DeSantis to his administration and called him “good.”
In July, during a visit to the Alligator Alcatraz immigration facility, Trump described their relationship as “a 10,” later adding “Maybe 9.9.”
Qualifications and potential posts
DeSantis served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a Judge Advocate General at Guantanamo Bay. He earned his law degree from Harvard in 2005.
His military and legal background were cited as reasons he could be considered for the Defense post. Sources say his preferred long-term goal is a Supreme Court nomination.
Supreme Court prospects
There are currently no open seats on the Supreme Court. Rumors have suggested Justices Clarence Thomas or Samuel Alito might step down at some point.
DeSantis has been publicly supportive of conservative justices. A source told Filmogaz.com he has a close bond with Justice Thomas.
Political context
Trump has already placed three nominees on the Supreme Court during his first presidential term. Any future vacancy would give him another chance to nominate a conservative justice.
Separately, Pete Hegseth has faced controversies that complicated his confirmation process. Those developments prompted discussion about alternative Defense nominees.
