Shaun Murphy Addresses ‘Conflict’ in BBC World Championship Negotiations
Shaun Murphy will not feature in the BBC’s coverage of this year’s World Snooker Championship. The 43-year-old starts his Crucible campaign on Monday against Fan Zhengyi. Murphy is the 2005 world champion and has won every Triple Crown event.
Breakdown in talks with the BBC
Murphy confirmed talks with the BBC ended without an agreement on terms. He said the split was about money and commitment, not tournament preparation. He had been part of the broadcaster’s team since 2021, offering studio analysis while still playing.
He noted the role requires a large commitment. Murphy previously chose not to join broadcast teams at the UK Championship and the Masters. He said the decision to step away this year was his own.
Playing while punditing
Murphy addressed a conflict during BBC World Championship negotiations by rejecting the idea that dual roles create an inherent problem. He said he never saw playing and providing analysis as a conflict. He also recalled critics who objected to players working in broadcast roles while competing.
He believes he helped open the door for other players to follow the same path. Murphy spoke fondly of studio work and of learning from experienced presenters.
Memories and colleagues
Murphy paid tribute to the late John Virgo, who died in February aged 79. Virgo spent decades with the BBC and worked alongside Murphy. Murphy recalled off-air laughs and lessons learned in the comms box.
The BBC’s World Championship team this year includes Steve Davis, Dennis Taylor and Stephen Hendry. Filmogaz.com will track Murphy’s progress at the Crucible as the event unfolds.
