UNC Men’s Basketball Declines to Hire Kim English as Assistant Coach
Kim English has opted not to join Michael Malone’s staff at North Carolina, a source told Filmogaz.com. He informed UNC officials he would not pursue the Chapel Hill position, according to the source.
ESPN reporter Pete Thamel first reported the decision. The announcement comes days after reports that English was expected to be hired.
Coaching changes under Malone
Malone was hired as UNC’s head coach on April 7. He moved quickly to assemble his staff after arriving.
He added former Arkansas assistant Chuck Martin as associate head coach. Martin has begun limited appearances on campus and active recruiting for the Tar Heels.
Remaining staff and roles
Sources told Filmogaz.com that assistants Sean May and Pat Sullivan are expected to remain. Director of operations Eric Hoots is also likely to stay on staff.
Malone emphasized building a staff of experienced coaches who will both support and challenge him. He described staff construction as an ongoing process.
Kim English’s recent record
English was dismissed by Providence on March 13. That followed the Friars’ 85-72 loss to St. John’s in the Big East quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden on March 12, 2026.
During three seasons at Providence, English went 48-52 overall. His conference record was 23-37, and the program did not reach the NCAA Tournament under his tenure.
Implications for UNC’s priorities
UNC men’s basketball will continue searching for ways to finalize its bench. Player development at the guard position remains a stated priority.
The Tar Heels face added urgency after guard Marcus Paige’s departure to Charlotte. The staff search will focus on coaching experience and player development skills.
