Increased Police Presence in Reading with Dispersal Orders for Cardiff Match

Reading host Cardiff City at 3pm on Saturday, April 18. Thames Valley Police has announced enhanced policing around the fixture.

Dispersal orders and coverage

TVP has put two Section 35 dispersal orders in place. They run from 8am until 8pm on Saturday, April 18.

  • The Select Car Leasing Stadium dispersal zone is bounded by the A33, Longwater Drive, Flagstaff Road, Green Park Railway Station and South Oak Way.
  • The Reading town centre dispersal zone includes Caversham Road, Richfield Avenue, Cow Lane, Beresford Road, Western Elms Avenue, Tilehurst Road, Bath Road, Southampton Street, London Road, Watlington Street, Forbury Road and Western Road. This area also covers Reading railway station.

Policing tactics deployed

Officers are using a range of tactics to manage the event. Strategies include football spotters, mounted officers, tactical cyclists, police dogs and drones.

There are also multiple police vehicles and visible patrols around the train station. The measures aim to reassure local communities and supporters.

Purpose and powers

The dispersal orders give officers powers to move on people causing, or likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress. Thames Valley Police describe the steps as preventative.

Police message to supporters

Chief Inspector Dave Washington is the tactical commander for the match. He urged fans to enjoy the game and behave responsibly.

He warned that antisocial behaviour and disorder will not be tolerated. Officers may make arrests and seek football banning orders against those who cause trouble.

Supporters are encouraged to speak to police, club staff or stewards if they have concerns. TVP says it will work with both clubs and local partners to keep people safe.
