Hampshire College Shuts Down Amid Ongoing Financial Struggles
Hampshire College will close after the Fall 2026 term, administrators announced Tuesday in an email obtained by Filmogaz.com. The decision follows years of enrollment declines and mounting financial pressure.
College leaders said they explored many options to remain open. Those efforts included refinancing debt, selling land, and recruiting more students.
Timeline and student options
Officials said students may finish degrees on campus through Fall 2026. Transfer pathways were arranged with several partner institutions.
- Amherst College
- Bennington College
- Mount Holyoke College
- Smith College
- Prescott College
- Massachusetts College of the Liberal Arts
- University of Massachusetts Amherst
All deposits for admitted students will be refunded. Some faculty and staff will remain to support degree completion.
Financial struggles and audits
Administrators blamed changing external factors for worsening finances. An independent audit raised serious concerns about long-term viability.
CliftonLarsonAllen found more than $20 million in debt. The audit also reported a $3.7 million operating deficit in 2025.
Auditors warned of “substantial doubt” about the college’s ability to continue. Accrediting agencies required the school to show cause in March why accreditation should not be questioned.
Enrollment trends and institutional responses
The college missed its 2025 recruitment target by roughly half. It enrolled 168 students instead of the targeted 300 for that year.
Full-time enrollment stood near 750 students. That was an increase from roughly 500 students in 2022, but still short of sustainable levels.
In 2024, administrators implemented cost-saving measures. Those moves included layoffs of non-faculty staff, benefit suspensions, and senior leadership pay cuts.
Background and legacy
Founded in 1965, the college built a distinct liberal arts model. Administrators said the community worked hard to preserve independence and core values.
Despite those efforts, leaders concluded that continuing operations was no longer feasible. The closure ends a chapter that began more than five decades ago.
Observers say the case highlights the fragility of small private colleges. Hampshire College shuts down amid ongoing financial struggles that proved impossible to overcome.
