Aintree Race Leads to Immediate Ban for Grand National Jockey

Toby McCain-Mitchell has been suspended for 10 days after stewards found he did not pull up Top Of The Bill before the gelding fell at the final fence. The decision followed an inquiry into the finish of the Randox Grand National at Aintree. McCain-Mitchell was making his Aintree debut.

Stewards’ findings and sanction

Stewards reviewed video evidence and interviewed the rider and the veterinary officer. They concluded the horse had tailed off and should have been pulled up. The Grand National jockey was given an immediate ban of 10 days for failing to act.

McCain-Mitchell is the grandson of trainer Ginger McCain. Top Of The Bill is a 10-year-old gelding. The horse is trained by Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies.

Incidents and veterinary assessments

Top Of The Bill fell at the last fence but walked back to the stables for assessment. He remained under observation by veterinary staff. He was one of three horses checked after falls in the race.

  • Quai De Bourbon, trained by Willie Mullins, fell at the second fence.
  • Mr Vango, trained by Sara Bradstock, came down at the sixth fence.
  • Both horses were loaded onto a horse ambulance and returned to the stables for further checks.

Jockey Robbie Dunne fell at the 19th fence while riding Stellar Story. He was assessed on course, was conscious and talking, and was taken to hospital for further treatment. Aintree confirmed all remaining riders and horses were accounted for.

Earlier in the day

There was an equine fatality earlier during the meeting. Get On George was euthanised after suffering an injury on the flat in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle.
