Takashi Yamazaki Reveals ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ at CinemaCon: Statue of Liberty at Risk

Takashi Yamazaki, fresh off his 2023 Oscar for Best Visual Effects, used CinemaCon to unveil his next Godzilla film. He previewed Godzilla Minus Zero for exhibitors at Caesars Palace.

What Yamazaki promised

Yamazaki said the move from Minus to Zero will be difficult. He described the new picture as a tale of desperation and hope. He added that the production is pushing technological limits for global theatrical audiences.

Scenes and reactions

The first-look clip drew audible gasps from the Colosseum crowd. It ends with the monster positioned ominously behind the Statue of Liberty. That image suggested New York City faces serious peril.

Early footage alternates between quiet and chaos. Viewers saw the giant lizard in water and on land. There were shots of packed streets, scientists in labs, and a grieving mother. The preview also included on-set moments with Yamazaki and the cast.

Key details from the preview

  • Focus on the Shikishima family and rising desperation in Japan.
  • Scenes implying a threat to New York landmarks.
  • Mix of large-scale destruction and intimate human drama.

Release plans and past performance

GKids, now under Toho ownership, will distribute across North America. A wide theatrical release is scheduled to begin Nov. 6. The company aims for a strong box office presence.

Yamazaki’s previous film, Godzilla Minus One, opened to $11.4 million in the U.S. It ultimately surpassed $57 million at the domestic box office. A remastered black-and-white edition played in Japan and then enjoyed a one-week run in the U.S. in late January 2024.

At CinemaCon, Takashi Yamazaki made clear he intends to follow that success. His presentation hinted that Statue of Liberty at Risk themes will drive the new film’s stakes.
