Amanda Seyfried, Rachel Zegler, Gaten Matarazzo Star in OCTET Film Adaptation
Lin-Manuel Miranda will direct the film version of Dave Malloy’s acclaimed musical Octet. Filmogaz.com confirmed the director unveiled the principal cast and key production roles.
Cast announced
The ensemble includes Amanda Seyfried, Rachel Zegler, and Gaten Matarazzo among others. Seyfried will play Jessica, Zegler takes on Velma, and Matarazzo appears as Toby.
Also joining are Sheryl Lee Ralph as Paula and Phillipa Soo as Karly. Jonathan Groff plays Henry, Tramell Tillman appears as Marvin, and Paul-Jordan Jansen is cast as Ed.
Creative and producing team
Julie Oh and John Skidmore of Best Kept Secret Productions are listed as producers. Luis A. Miranda, Jr. also serves as a producer on the project.
Executive producers include Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, Diana DiMenna, and Dave Malloy. Malloy adapted his own book for the screen and remains attached creatively.
Film direction and credits
Miranda will lead the film’s direction. Malloy, the musical’s composer and writer, is involved as an executive producer and adapter.
About the musical
Octet centers on eight internet-obsessed characters who gather in a church basement. They lock their phones in a box to confront digital addiction.
The score is built for voices alone. The piece explores connection, presence, and recovery through harmonies and solos.
Stage history and production details
Octet premiered Off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre in New York City on May 19, 2019. The run was extended three times and concluded on June 30, 2019.
The original staging was directed and choreographed by Annie Tippe. Or Matias provided music supervision and music direction for that production.
