Hollywood Actor Dies After Assaulting Ex Post-Early Jail Release

Jason Hoganson, 55, has died unexpectedly, his funeral home confirmed. The former actor passed away on April 4.

Career and public profile

Hoganson played the drifter Pete in the 1988 film Empire State. He appeared alongside Ray McAnally, Jamie Foreman and Martin Landau.

Once a leading man, he later battled alcohol, drugs and criminality. He was frequently described as heavily tattooed.

Prison release and arrest

Hoganson was released early from HMP Durham in September 2024. The release was part of a government scheme to ease prison overcrowding.

Officials later said he had been freed in error after serving half of an 18-month sentence. That sentence related to assaulting his ex-partner, Rachel Usher, and breaching a restraining order.

A day after his release he was arrested in Newcastle’s West End. Police said he went to Ms Usher’s flat and allegedly slapped her. He later lodged an appeal against the charge.

The high-profile sequence of events led some outlets to note that a Hollywood actor dies after assaulting ex post-early jail release in public discussion. The case prompted questions about the early release process.

Remarks after release

On leaving prison, Hoganson spoke about his long record. He said he had spent roughly 27 years behind bars over 32 years.

He also described time on remand and criticized modern prison conditions. He claimed that facilities no longer acted as a deterrent.

Death, family and funeral

R W Barrett & Son Funeral Services announced his unexpected death. They described him as the father of Jade, Kitt, Michael, Charlotte and Clarice.

He was named as the treasured son of Maureen and the late Ronnie. Siblings were listed as Michael, Layland and Kelly.

His funeral will take place on April 28 at the West Road Crematorium in Newcastle.
