Texas Man Faces Charges for Molotov Cocktail Attack on Sam Altman’s SF Home
A 20-year-old Texas man has been charged after an alleged Molotov cocktail attack at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco home. Court records unsealed Monday detail the incident and a subsequent arrest.
The attack and immediate response
San Francisco police say the incident occurred around 4 a.m. on April 10, 2026. Surveillance footage reportedly shows the suspect outside Altman’s residence before the device was thrown.
The device ignited on an exterior gate, officials said. No injuries were reported at the scene.
Officers arrested the suspect roughly an hour later outside OpenAI’s headquarters. Investigators say he threatened to burn down the building.
Arrest evidence and alleged actions
Police allege the man carried kerosene in his backpack. Court papers say he tried to smash the headquarters’ glass with a chair.
Federal filings mention a document expressing anti–AI executive sentiment. Investigators found a list of names and addresses tied to board members, CEOs and investors.
Charges and allegations
Prosecutors charged the suspect with attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives. He also faces a count for possessing an unregistered firearm.
Court documents indicate the defendant admitted to attempting to kill one person. The filings say he wrote about leading by example if urging violence.
