Milwaukee Police Fatally Shoot Homicide Suspect in Gunfight
A 31-year-old man wanted in a deadly south side shooting died after exchanging gunfire with officers Monday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
Pursuit and gunfire
Police said officers were searching for a suspect tied to a homicide near 7th and Mitchell earlier that morning. Later, during a shots-fired call near 35th and Walnut, officers located the vehicle linked to that case.
Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver fled. A pursuit ended in a crash at 35th Street and National Avenue, just north of the 35th Street bridge, shortly before 5 p.m.
Shootout at the scene
After the crash, the driver exited the vehicle and opened fire at officers. Several officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
Witnesses reported dozens of shots. A chopper and on-the-ground video showed a burst of gunfire that lasted about 19 seconds.
Injuries and evidence
Police said all officers and bystanders were uninjured. One 34-year-old person involved in the crash was transported to a hospital.
Investigators recovered two firearms at the scene. Aerial footage showed roughly 50 evidence markers around the viaduct and nearby streets.

Eight officers returned fire, and all are uninjured. Per department policy, the officers who discharged their weapons have been placed on administrative leave.

Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman confirmed officers were seeking a suspect in the morning homicide. He said the vehicle they located was tied to that investigation.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team will handle the probe. The Wauwatosa Police Department is the lead investigating agency.
