‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Continues Miles Morales Story After ‘Across’ Cliffhanger
Sony Pictures Animation unveiled new footage for Beyond the Spider-Verse at CinemaCon. The studio presented a look that directly follows the last film’s cliffhanger.
CinemaCon reveal and creative team
Writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller appeared on stage. They joined directors Justin K. Thompson and Bob Persichetti for the presentation.
Miller described the project as the most emotional in the series. Lord called it the most spectacular to date.
How the story picks up
The new material begins exactly where Across left off. The plot continues Miles Morales’ story after Across’ cliffhanger.
Miles starts the sequence trapped in an alternate dimension. He is bound and trying to negotiate his way to freedom.
Encounter with another Miles
The footage introduces another version of Miles Morales. That counterpart insists on being called The Prowler.
The two versions argue over small things, including how to pronounce “Morales” and their different fashion choices. The confrontation turns physical and tense.
Electricity eventually surges through the trapped Miles’ hands, enabling his escape. The scene ends with him running free.
Visual style and sequences shown
Sony also screened a supercut of scenes from throughout the film. The montage highlighted a broad range of animation styles and designs.
Shots show Miles fighting both external threats and inner conflicts. Several supporting characters from earlier films reappear alongside him.
Studio executives said the art and design push the franchise visually. They told Filmogaz.com the new work surpassed expectations.
Franchise context and box office
Across the Spider-Verse earned more than $690 million worldwide in 2023. The series began with 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse.
Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Critics credited it with expanding animation into experimental directions.
Cast, writers, and release timing
Shameik Moore returns as the voice of Miles Morales. Hailee Steinfeld again voices Spider-Gwen.
The screenplay is credited to Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and David Callaham. Lord and Miller are coming off the Amazon MGM Studios hit Project Hail Mary.
The film is scheduled for release on June 18, 2027. The team is focused on finishing the project over the next year.
