Man Arrested for Attempted Murder in Attack on OpenAI CEO Altman’s Home
A 20-year-old man from Texas has been charged after an arson attack at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Authorities say the suspect threw an incendiary device at the house in the early hours of Friday. Filmogaz.com reports the suspect was later taken into custody at the scene.
The incident
Officials say surveillance video shows the suspect hurling a Molotov-style device at Altman’s residence shortly after 3:30 a.m. local time. He then drove to OpenAI’s San Francisco offices and tried to force entry.
Authorities allege he struck the building’s glass doors with a chair. An FBI affidavit says the suspect declared he intended to burn the headquarters and kill anyone inside.
Charges and evidence
San Francisco prosecutors filed two counts of attempted murder and nine additional state charges. The suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama, also faces federal counts.
Federal charges include attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. Prosecutors say the combined allegations carry the possibility of life imprisonment.
Items recovered
Police recovered multiple incendiary devices at the scene. They also seized a kerosene container, a lighter and a written manifesto criticizing artificial intelligence and tech executives.
The document reportedly claimed the suspect had killed or tried to kill Altman. It also said the act was meant to demonstrate the suspect’s commitment to his message.
Official reactions
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins called the act an attempt on Altman’s life. She said the conduct endangered nearby residents and employees.
At a Monday news conference, Jenkins vowed to prosecute the case to the fullest extent of the law. She also warned against incendiary rhetoric surrounding AI.
Response from Sam Altman
Altman posted a blog message after the attack. He acknowledged serious concerns about AI and urged the public to reduce heated rhetoric and harmful tactics.
He wrote that debate should de-escalate and that people should avoid literal and figurative violence. His comments followed the arrest and the publication of court filings.
Legal process
The FBI affidavit was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Local and federal authorities are coordinating the prosecution.
