Qantas Halts Adelaide-Mount Gambier Flights Due to Fuel Shortages
Qantas Airways has announced the cancellation of all flights to and from Mount Gambier, South Australia, due to rising fuel costs and decreasing passenger demand. The airline had been operating a four-day-a-week service between Mount Gambier and Adelaide but will cease operations on May 18.
Impact on Regional Connectivity
This decision leaves Regional Express (REX) Airlines as the only carrier servicing Mount Gambier. REX continues to provide flights to both Adelaide and Melbourne on a daily basis.
Reasons for Halted Flights
- Qantas expects its fuel expenses to rise between $600 million and $800 million.
- To cope with these costs, the airline plans to cut domestic flight capacity by 5% from May 18 to June 30.
- The Mount Gambier to Adelaide route has seen flights operating at less than 20% capacity, indicating a significant drop in demand.
Statements from Qantas Officials
Mark Dal Pra, CEO of QantasLink, expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to customers and the local community. He confirmed that affected passengers would receive refunds for their bookings.
Dal Pra stated, “While the recent increase in fuel prices makes the situation more difficult, the decline in demand means the route is no longer viable for us.” He mentioned efforts to stimulate demand, including adjusting schedules and promotional sales, but these measures did not yield sustainable results.
Local Reactions
The decision has raised concerns among local leaders. South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas acknowledged the commercial realities Qantas faces, while expressing disappointment in the loss of services to Mount Gambier. He highlighted that the federal government had previously intervened to support REX, emphasizing the importance of reliable regional flights.
A Brief History of Services
Qantas launched its Mount Gambier to Adelaide service in March 2021. Prior to this discontinuation, the airline had also offered flights to Melbourne but ended that route in 2022.
As of now, Mount Gambier residents will rely solely on REX for air travel, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by regional airlines in the current economic climate.
