Phillies’ Jonathan Bowlan Injured; Adolis García to Bat Cleanup
The Philadelphia Phillies placed right-hander Jonathan Bowlan on the 15-day injured list Monday. The team diagnosed a mild right groin strain after his outing Sunday in Arizona.
Bowlan’s status and background
Bowlan departed Sunday after two-thirds of an inning in the Phillies’ 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks. He allowed one inherited runner to score and recorded two strikeouts while working to limit other baserunners.
The 29-year-old has a 3.86 ERA across seven innings this season. He was acquired from the Kansas City Royals this offseason in the trade that sent Matt Strahm to Kansas City.
Pitching profile and recovery outlook
Bowlan’s fastball averages about 97.4 mph and generates a 37.5 percent whiff rate. He was brought in as a righty specialist and has been developing a changeup since spring to improve versus left-handed hitters.
Manager Rob Thomson called the strain mild and said the team expects Bowlan to be available after the 15-day minimum. Thomson emphasized caution as the club manages the injury.
Roster move: Seth Johnson recalled
The Phillies recalled right-hander Seth Johnson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Bowlan’s roster spot. Johnson has worked in six Triple-A games this season and carries a 3.00 ERA with two saves.
Johnson, 27, has 15 major-league innings between 2024 and 2025. His Triple-A fastball has averaged about 98.3 mph this year.
What the club expects from Johnson
Thomson said Johnson has tightened his command while maintaining elite velocity. The manager also noted improvements in secondary offerings that should help Johnson in big-league matchups.
Lineup adjustment: Adolis García moves to cleanup
The club experimented with its No. 4 spot for Monday’s opener against Chicago. After weighing options such as J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm, the Phillies put Adolis García in the cleanup hole against right-hander Javier Assad.
Thomson kept the top three intact — Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Bryce Harper — to ensure first-inning plate appearances. Brandon Marsh hit fifth, between García and Alec Bohm, who moved to sixth.
Context on García and Bohm
García has struggled recently, collecting one hit and striking out eight times in his last five games. His current strikeout rate sits at 27.9 percent.
Bohm is slumping as well, batting .148 with a .456 OPS this season. Thomson said the lineup shift aims to relieve pressure on Bohm while allowing him to regain his timing.

Other roster and rehab notes
Righty Yoniel Curet was designated for assignment and then claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers. The move clears space as the Phillies manage bullpen depth.
Zack Wheeler, recovering from thoracic outlet surgery, is scheduled to throw five to six innings or 80–85 pitches for Double-A Reading in Somerset, New Jersey. That outing continues his rehab while the Triple-A IronPigs are on the road in St. Paul.
Aaron Nola (1-1, 3.63 ERA) is lined up to start Tuesday against Cubs right-hander Colin Rea (1-0, 3.18). The club will monitor Bowlan’s timeline and Johnson’s performance as the week progresses.
