ESPN’s Dick Vitale Faces Fifth Cancer Diagnosis

Legendary ESPN college basketball announcer Dick Vitale has revealed he is facing his fifth cancer diagnosis. The announcement came on a Monday, via a statement shared by ESPN.

Dick Vitale’s Current Health Battle

In his statement, Vitale disclosed that his oncologist, Dr. Brown, confirmed the presence of melanoma in his lung and liver cavity. He stated, “I will be starting immunotherapy shortly and plan on winning this battle.” At the age of 86, Vitale has become a prominent figure in raising awareness about cancer.

Previous Cancer Diagnoses

Vitale has fought cancer four times before, emerging victorious each time. His diagnosis journey began in 2021 when he was first diagnosed with melanoma. Later, he learned he also had lymphoma. After overcoming these challenges, he was declared cancer-free but was informed in 2023 of cancer affecting his vocal cords. By 2024, he faced lymph node cancer, which led to surgery to remove the affected lymph nodes.

Impact on Cancer Awareness and Fundraising

Throughout his battles, Vitale has been a vocal advocate for cancer research. His efforts have contributed to raising over $105 million for pediatric cancer research. Currently, he aims to garner an additional $12 million by May 1.

Return to Broadcasting

In January 2025, Vitale announced a significant milestone: his doctors declared him cancer-free once again. This clearance allowed him to return to his beloved role as a sportscaster.

Notable Broadcasts

During the college basketball season, Vitale resumed his commentary duties in a limited capacity. He called pivotal games for both ESPN and Turner Sports, including a much-anticipated matchup between Indiana and Kentucky, which he co-announced with Charles Barkley. He also worked on various games throughout the season.

Vitale’s Resilience

In his recent announcement, Vitale expressed unwavering confidence in his ability to defeat cancer once more. “I’ve beaten melanoma. I’ve beaten lymphoma. I’ve beaten vocal cord cancer. I’ve beaten lymph node cancer. I’m four for four, and I’m fully confident I’m going to make it five for five,” he stated.

As he embarks on this next chapter of his health journey, Vitale continues to inspire many with his perseverance and determination.
