Guardians Assign Kolby Allard for Release

The Cleveland Guardians have made significant roster changes, reinstating outfielder George Valera and right-hander Hunter Gaddis from the injured list. In a corresponding move, outfielder/first baseman CJ Kayfus has been sent down to Triple-A Columbus, and left-hander Kolby Allard has been designated for assignment.

Key Roster Changes

With the addition of Valera and Gaddis, the Guardians’ 40-man roster now stands at 39 players following Allard’s DFA. Kolby Allard, who has found himself on the brink of uncertainty multiple times, was out of options and has been waived in the past. In July of last year, the team attempted to outright waivers on Allard but re-signed him shortly after.

Allard’s Performance and Future

  • Last season, Allard contributed by logging 65 innings with a commendable 2.63 ERA.
  • Despite average fastball velocity around 90 mph, he managed a low strikeout rate.
  • This year, Allard has struggled, allowing 10 runs over 8 2/3 innings in four appearances.
  • His recent outing included a five-run performance against the Braves.
  • There is a likelihood of Allard being placed on waivers again this week, with a chance to clear and elect free agency.

Historically, the Guardians have valued Allard as a depth option and may pursue a minor league deal if he goes unclaimed.

Returns of Valera and Gaddis

Hunter Gaddis returns to the team after recovering from a minor forearm issue sustained during Spring Training. Over the past two seasons, he has proven to be an effective reliever. Should he regain full health, he could become one of Cleveland’s premier setup pitchers.

  • During his rehab assignment, Gaddis averaged 92.8 mph on his fastball.
  • The team may ease him back into medium-leverage situations initially.

George Valera has also returned from a stint on the injured list due to a mild calf strain. He excelled during his eight-game rehab assignment and will join a lefty-heavy outfield alongside players like Steven Kwan and Chase DeLauter.

Impact on Kayfus

CJ Kayfus has been optioned back to Triple-A Columbus after a sluggish start in the big leagues. His performance included a batting line of .182/.280/.364 over nine games.
