Los Angeles Schools May Close Tuesday Amid Concerns: Here’s Why

Los Angeles Unified faces a possible district-wide shutdown on Tuesday, April 14. Unions representing about 60,000 LAUSD workers say they will strike without a new contract.

The dispute centers on pay, special education supports and higher staffing levels. These issues have driven months of bargaining and public warnings.

Recent Tentative Deals

The district announced tentative agreements with two unions on April 12. United Teachers Los Angeles reached a two-year deal the district described that day.

UTLA represents more than 37,500 teachers and staff. The union reported an average salary increase of 13.86 percent.

The district also reached a tentative deal with Associated Administrators Los Angeles and Teamsters Local 2010. That unit covers about 2,900 administrators, including principals. The agreement includes salary increases, a district spokesperson said.

SEIU Local 99 Remains Unresolved

Service Employees International Union Local 99 represents roughly 30,000 support staff. Its members include cafeteria workers, custodians and bus drivers.

SEIU Local 99 announced on April 12 that it plans to strike April 14 if no agreement is reached. The union said UTLA and AALA/Teamsters are prepared to join in solidarity.

Why strike action could close schools

District officials warned that a strike by SEIU Local 99 would force closures. LAUSD said all its schools would close if the support-staff strike proceeds.

LAUSD serves hundreds of thousands of students in more than 600 schools, according to 2025 district data. The district projected nearly 400,000 students for 2025–26, excluding charter and adult education programs.

District Response and Resources

On April 13, the district said unions had declared an open-ended strike. Officials added they will keep meeting with SEIU to try to reach a deal and reopen schools quickly.
