BBC’s 8-Part Forbidden Romance Drama with Shetland Star: Your Next Binge Sensation

Filmogaz.com reports the BBC has unveiled first-look images for Mint. The new series blends crime and romance in a modern tragic love story.

Premise

Mint follows Shannon and Arran. Shannon is the daughter of the town’s dominant crime family. Arran arrives as a newcomer linked to a rival clan.

Their relationship sparks a forbidden romance drama that reshapes both lives. The show has been compared to a modern Romeo and Juliet.

Family conflict and stakes

Shannon’s father, Dylan, shocks the family by stepping down as boss. His second-in-command, Sam, takes control and pursues different tactics.

The story also explores Shannon’s parents, her older brother Luke, and her resolute grandmother Ollie. The family implosion runs alongside the central love story.

Cast

  • Emma Laird leads as Shannon. Her credits include The Brutalist and Mayor of Kingstown.
  • Ben Coyle-Larner, known as musician Loyle Carner, debuts in acting as Arran.
  • Lewis Gribben from Shetland appears among the principal cast.
  • Supporting actors include Sam Riley, Laura Fraser, Connor Newall, and Lindsay Duncan.

Creator and production

Writer-director Charlotte Regan developed the project. She previously made Scrapper and has long carried this story in mind.

The series comes from Fearless Minds and House Productions. Their past work includes The Critic, Sherwood, and the Oscar-recognised Conclave.

Creative intent

Regan has described Mint as a project she could not stop thinking about. She praised the BBC partnership and the cast assembled for the series.

Release details

Mint is an eight-part series. All episodes arrive on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Monday 20 April.

The show also airs on BBC One the same night at 9pm. Early publicity describes the drama as carrying “crushing heartbreak.”

Reception and recommendations

Nicky Morris, Acting TV Editor at HELLO!, listed Mint on her watchlist. She cited her interest in both romance and crime drama genres.

With a Shetland star in the cast and high production pedigree, some viewers call this the next binge sensation. The series positions itself as a BBC 8-part offering fans of intense romance and crime.
