Avec’s New App Lets You Swipe Through Emails Like Tinder
Avec, a new email management app, is designed to streamline inbox organization through a unique, Tinder-style swipe interface. Initially launched for iOS, the app focuses on enhancing mobile email experiences.
How Avec Works
Using swipe cards, Avec lets users interact with their emails in an intuitive way. A left swipe moves an email to a “later” pile, while a right swipe archives it. This design allows for quick triage without overwhelming users.
One of Avec’s standout features is its voice reply function. By holding down a button, users can dictate responses. Once released, the app transcribes the speech into a draft, which users can then edit for accuracy before sending.
Learning from User Interactions
Avec refines its filtering process by observing which emails users categorize as “unimportant.” This functionality enables the app to group less relevant emails, simplifying management. For those who prefer a traditional layout, a standard list view is also available.
Background and Development
Jonathan Unikowski founded Avec after recognizing a gap in the email market. He previously worked in product engineering at Replit and sought to develop daily-use tools that address common frustrations with email.
Unikowski noted that the email interface has largely stagnated over the past 25 years, with Gmail being one of the last significant innovations. He emphasized the potential for improved design and AI integration to reshape user experiences.
Market Landscape
Avec operates amid various competitors in the email management space, including Superhuman, Shortwave, Spike, and Basecamp’s Hey. Despite their efforts, none have reached the scale or user base of Gmail.
Launch and Accessibility
Currently, Avec is limited to users within the United States and is free for Gmail accounts, with Outlook support expected soon. Plans for paid features are in development, with specific offerings still being explored.
Funding and Investor Backing
The company has successfully raised $8.4 million from notable investors, including Lightspeed and Haystack. Key individual investors include Replit’s CEO Amjad Masad and Behance co-founder Scott Belsky.
Avec aims to innovate the email experience for its users, proving that convenience and improved design can significantly enhance everyday tasks.
