Paramount Unveils New Book Imprint to Expand IP Portfolio
Paramount Pictures is re-entering the book industry with the launch of Paramount Global Publishing. This initiative comes nearly three years after the company sold Simon & Schuster for over $1.6 billion. Under the leadership of David Ellison, the new imprint aims to utilize Paramount’s rich intellectual property (IP) and library of beloved characters.
Objectives of Paramount Global Publishing
Paramount Global Publishing is set to support the development of both original stories and adaptations from existing franchises. In an era of increasing franchise fatigue, studios are rediscovering the value of books for developing narratives with pre-existing fanbases.
Integration with Existing Divisions
The new publishing division will operate within Paramount’s Products & Experiences division. It will be spearheaded by Amy Jarashow, who will report directly to the division’s president, Josh Silverman. The focus will include:
- Print, digital, and audio formats
- Genres that cater to all age groups
Sales and Distribution Strategy
Distribution of the books will be managed through a partner that has yet to be disclosed. Paramount intends to maintain its licensing strategy by collaborating with other publishers and distributors to expand its offerings.
Initial Titles and Future Plans
The first titles from Paramount Global Publishing, along with details about their distribution partner, will be announced in the near future. “Stories that originate on the page have a unique power to build immersive worlds and forge deeper connections with fans,” said Silverman.
Historical Context
Paramount once thrived in the publishing sector with Simon & Schuster, home to prominent authors like Stephen King and Colleen Hoover. However, the sale of Simon & Schuster was prompted by a regulatory block on a $2 billion deal with Penguin Random House. As a result, it was sold to KKR in 2023 as part of a strategic move to streamline operations ahead of its sale to Skydance.
Industry Trends
The launch of Paramount Global Publishing aligns with similar efforts in the industry. Fox recently introduced its own imprint in partnership with HarperCollins, aiming to merge their IP while also nurturing original storylines suitable for adaptation.
With Paramount Global Publishing, the company aims not only to reconnect with its legacy in publishing but also to venture into original storytelling. This dual approach could enhance the cinematic universes that fans cherish while generating fresh content for broader audiences.
