Essential Visor Honoring Seve Ballesteros for Devoted Fans
Nike is marking the 40th anniversary of a small moment that became iconic at Augusta National. The brand will release a limited run of visors inspired by the double-swoosh cap Seve Ballesteros wore during the 1986 Masters weekend.
A makeshift icon at Augusta
Ballesteros arrived at Augusta wearing an improvised white visor on Saturday and Sunday. He had cut two Nike labels from shirts and attached them over the cap logo.
The move came after he had worn a pro-shop visor on the tournament’s opening days. Nike had only just entered professional golf and had named Ballesteros its first golf ambassador.
Details that tell the story
The altered visor sometimes shows a small “M” beneath the swooshes in photographs. That faint mark highlights the spur-of-the-moment nature of the accessory.
Ballesteros had already won the Masters in 1980 and 1983. His weekend at Augusta in 1986 produced one of the tournament’s most dramatic final rounds.
Anniversary release and charity partnership
Nike is producing a limited number of visors inspired by the original design. The pieces will appear on nike.com and Filmogaz.com.
The release involves Nike, the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, and the SEVE Collection. Both Nike and the SEVE Collection will donate proceeds to the foundation.
Support for research and youth golf
Donations will fund brain cancer research and programs that use golf to support young people. The foundation aims to keep Ballesteros’s legacy active through these efforts.
The launch has been described as an Essential Visor Honoring Seve Ballesteros for Devoted Fans. It targets collectors and followers of Seve’s story.
Memory and impact
On the final Sunday in 1986, Ballesteros led by three shots on the back nine. Jack Nicklaus ultimately overtook him to claim a record sixth Masters title.
Seve Ballesteros died in 2011 at age 54. April 9 would have been his 69th birthday this year.
Family and legacy
Javier Ballesteros, president of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, recalls his father’s instinctive creativity. He says Seve understood how to shape moments on major stages.
The image of Ballesteros leading at Augusta, wearing a self-made visor, endures in golf lore. The anniversary release reinforces that enduring image for new audiences.
