TransLink Accelerates Major RapidBus Expansion from North Shore to Metrotown
TransLink is set to enhance public transit service across Metro Vancouver with the expedited launch of the R2 RapidBus extension to Metrotown. This upgraded service will link the North Shore with Burnaby and facilitate increased daily travel options.
Key Details of the R2 RapidBus Expansion
Scheduled to begin in September, the R2 Marine–Willingdon RapidBus will operate more than three months ahead of its original timeline. This expansion is part of TransLink’s 2025 Investment Plan.
Route and Accessibility Improvements
- The R2 RapidBus will connect Phibbs Exchange to Metrotown Station.
- This route will cover key locations, including Park Royal, Lonsdale Quay, and Brentwood Town Centre.
- Service frequency will be every 6-7 minutes during peak times, significantly reducing wait times.
- Larger, 60-foot buses will enhance capacity and passenger comfort.
The upgraded service will eliminate the need for transfers at Phibbs Exchange, improving efficiency for travelers. Currently, the R2 RapidBus sees around 1.9 million boardings annually.
Construction and Modifications
Construction is set to commence by the end of April 2026, and it will last through the summer. The project includes modifying 14 existing bus stops and adding two new shelters to enhance accessibility in Burnaby.
Impact on Existing Services
The current #222 Willingdon Express, which operates only during peak hours, will be discontinued in September to make way for the R2 all-day service. Local service will still be provided by Route 130, mostly terminating at Kootenay Loop.
Community and Government Support
This significant transit upgrade reflects the collaborative efforts of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, local governments, and Indigenous authorities. All parties are committed to enhancing transit in this vital area.
Statements from Officials
- Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink: This upgrade is crucial for connecting communities to jobs and services.
- Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation: The project will ease congestion and improve travel reliability across Metro Vancouver.
- Linda Buchanan, Mayor of North Vancouver: The early launch of the R2 extension is significant for improving connectivity and accessibility.
This RapidBus initiative exemplifies a strong commitment to public transportation improvements in fast-growing regions. Continued planning for future Bus Rapid Transit solutions and route assessments will shape the future of transit in Vancouver and Burnaby.
