Legal Dispute Resolves: Misplaced House Relocated to Correct Address

David and Melanie Moor are residents of south-west Victoria who recently resolved a legal dispute regarding their home. Their dream retirement house was mistakenly built on the wrong block in a Camperdown subdivision. This misplacement led to a significant upheaval for the couple, who found relief when their home was relocated to the correct address.

Background of the Dispute

The Moors purchased their property with the belief that they were on the right plot, based on information provided by a real estate agent in 2021. However, the agent later denied any fault, suggesting that the couple may have been confused.

After two years of legal battles, the wait ended when the couple’s home was moved a mere 100 meters back onto their own land just before Easter.

Legal Proceedings and Decisions

  • The property owner initially considered a land swap but rejected it, claiming the properties were not equivalent.
  • In August 2025, the landowner issued a 14-day notice for the house removal, citing the threat of a future sale if compliance was not met.
  • An extension was granted, allowing the Moors until May 2 to clear the block.

The Relocation Process

The Moor family’s home is currently resting on oil drums as it awaits restumping. All services, including the septic system and electrical wiring, have been disconnected.

They now face the task of removing 160 stumps from their neighbor’s property and restoring the land to its original state. Despite warnings from previous contractors about the stability of the house, they managed to find a capable mover for the relocation.

Projected Costs and Plans

The couple estimates that relocating their home will cost approximately $100,000, including reinstallation of essential services. This is in addition to the $500,000 they already invested in their home.

Mr. Moor expressed hope that they could spare others from a similar situation by sharing their experience. He emphasized the importance of conducting personal research rather than solely relying on professionals.

Future Outlook

As part of their temporary living arrangements, the couple purchased a 20-foot caravan to accommodate themselves and their daughter for the next year while refurbishing the home. Despite the challenges they faced, they remain hopeful and are eager to create a welcoming environment for their grandchildren.

Although the ordeal has taken a toll on their mental well-being, the Moors have no regrets about relocating to Camperdown. They appreciate the community and cherish their daughter’s success in a local high school.
