Province Secures Expanded Dental Coverage in New Agreement with Dentists
A new agreement has been established between the government and dentists in the province, expanding dental coverage significantly. This agreement introduces new provisions for adult tooth extractions and allocates funding aimed at addressing the shortage of dentists in rural regions.
Expanded Dental Coverage Under New Agreement
Dr. Craig Smith, President of the NL Dental Association, expressed satisfaction with the continuation of dental coverage for children through the Medical Care Plan (MCP) until 2030. He noted:
“We actually have one of the best children’s dental care plans in the country. This new agreement has firmed that contract up for the next four years.”
- Children in Newfoundland and Labrador are fully covered under MCP until their 13th birthday.
- No restrictions apply to this dental coverage.
Significant Improvements in the Agreement
In addition to preserving children’s coverage, the agreement brings notable enhancements. According to Dr. Smith:
“We’ve made it better. Those are significant achievements; we didn’t want to see any deterioration in this plan whatsoever.”
Support for Rural Dentists
The revised agreement also targets rural healthcare issues. It includes:
- The introduction of a rural retention bonus for 10 dentists currently serving in under-serviced areas.
- An increase to the Rural Dental Bursary Program, providing additional financial support for future dentists.
This comprehensive approach aims to ensure better access to dental care across the province, particularly in rural communities where healthcare resources are limited. The government continues to address the pressing need for dental services while prioritizing children’s oral health.
