Canada’s Lotto Max Odds Set for Upcoming Change
Canadians can expect notable changes to the Lotto Max game as of April 10, 2023. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) will implement these adjustments, including a price increase for tickets and alterations to the number of plays and winning odds.
Key Changes to Lotto Max
- Ticket Price: The price of a Lotto Max ticket will rise from $5 to $6.
- Lines Per Ticket: Each ticket will now provide four lines instead of the previous three.
- Number Selection: Players will choose seven numbers from a pool of 52, instead of 50.
Impact on Winning Odds
Michael Wallace, an associate professor of biostatistics at the University of Waterloo, explained that while the expected return on tickets slightly rises due to the increased price, the change to a larger set of numbers impacts winning odds. Players have lower chances of winning with each individual play.
Wallace noted, “With lotteries, the more numbers you choose from, the lower your chances are of winning.” Although the odds of winning a jackpot remain similar—about one in 33.4 million per ticket—the overall odds of winning any prize will improve from approximately one in seven to about one in 5.8.
What Players Can Expect
Players can anticipate that their chances of winning smaller prizes will slightly increase. Wallace stated that winnings such as free plays or $20 prizes would become more attainable, though the odds for larger jackpots remain largely unchanged.
Under the new Lotto Max format, additional $100,000 prizes will be introduced, which are tied to the jackpot size. Despite the addition of these prizes, Wallace cautioned that their odds of winning are still very low.
Maximum Jackpot Increase
The maximum jackpot amount will also see an increase, rising from $80 million to $90 million. This change aims to enhance the allure of participating in Lotto Max while adjusting the game’s design to improve players’ overall experience.
