Penguins Delight in Easter Egg Hunt at West Midlands Safari Park
Humboldt penguins at West Midlands Safari Park received a seasonal twist to their morning feed. Staff tossed small floating toys into the pool and hid larger, fish-filled eggs around their habitat.
The birds chased, bobbed and nudged the floating items across the water. Some penguins found the hidden fish-filled eggs and ate them on the spot.
Enrichment and behaviour
The activity formed part of the park’s Easter programming. Keepers use novel items to stimulate the colony and encourage natural behaviours.
Deputy head keeper Vicky McFarlane said the team continually seeks fresh enrichment ideas. She noted the colony can be picky, but they were eager to interact with colourful egg toys.
Different responses within the colony
Older or hungrier birds favoured the larger eggs that contained fish. Younger penguins preferred the small, floating toys and spent time playing in the water.
Staff described the event as a fun way to burn off energy during the bank holiday weekend. Visitors also enjoyed watching the penguins engage with the enrichment.
Easter Eggstravaganza at the park
The egg activity was one element of the park’s Easter Eggstravaganza. The wider program included a guest trail, a live show and themed decorations.
